The preparatory Choir School annually educated 38 boarding Choristers and Probationers from the age of 7 to 13 until 1989, when it changed its name to the Cathedral School to reflect its expansion to include over 50 day pupils.

In the 1990s a pre-prep department opened up the school to around 150 pupils. Beginning in the 2001 academic year, girls joined the preparatory classes, starting in Year 3.

All pupils who have reached academic Year 7, 8 or 9 (ages 11-13) before leaving the school are now eligible for membership of the Guild.
